Fly from the United States to Rome.
Upon arrival at the airport in Rome, we’ll meet and greet our transfer assistant and driver and go to the Rome city center for a guided tour of the legendary Colosseum, famous as a place of spectacle and death. You will also see the Roman Forum, where Romans would meet to discuss politics and religion, as well as to shop. Also part of the glory of Imperial Rome, Circus Maximus was a stadium for chariot racing that could accommodate 150,000 spectators! We’ll enjoy free time for lunch, and later transfer to the port of Civitavecchia for cruise embarkation aboard the Jewel of the Seas.
Today is a day for relaxing, fellowship and Bible Study as we cruise the Adriatic and the Aegean seas. Enjoy your cruise amenities and onboard entertainment.
Mykonos, “The Island of the Winds,” is known for its whitewashed villages sprinkled with blue and jade green. It’s also famous for its sophisticated nightlife. The most popular island in the Cyclades is bustling with activity, awash in beautiful alleyways, and home to alluring sandy beaches.
Our ship will dock at the port of Piraeus at Athens, where we will admire the architectural miracles of ancient Athens and follow our guide to the world-renowned Acropolis to see the Propylaea, the Erectheum and the Parthenon. Then we’ll visit Mars Hill where Paul delivered his speech on the “Unknown God.” We’ll see the Agora, the ancient center of the economic and public life of the city, where Paul preached to the skeptical Athenians. During the bus tour, we’ll see Constitution Square with the House of Parliament and the Tomb of the Un-known Soldier, the Temple of Zeus, the Old Olympic Stadium, and the Neoclassical buildings of Athens. We’ll go on to ancient Corinth, the once glorious city near the Isthmus, where Paul met Aquilla and Priscilla and spent a year and a half preaching the Gospel. We’ll visit the Archaeological Museum, the Forum, the Temples and the famous Bema, where Paul stood before Gallio, accused by the Jews of Corinth.
Santorini is a destination famous for its breathtaking views of the Aegean Sea, its majestic volcano and unique sunset. You can take the cable car up to the town of Fira to stroll around the whitewashed narrow streets or go on a tour to the ancient site of Akrotiri.
Today we are cruising back to the Mediterranean Sea toward the island of Malta. Use this day to enjoy our great cruise ship and its amenities.
Malta is an island country between Sicily and the African coast. This fort city was established by the Knights of St. John in the 15th century. The apostle Paul lived and preached here. We will visit the Grotto of St. Paul and St. Paul Bay.
Today we dock at Messina, Sicily, and drive toward Syracuse, the glorious town that Paul visited. At some point around the year 59, he preached at Syracuse, probably in the place where the paleo-Christian Church of St. John was built. Whatever he said would have been expressed in Greek, the vernacular of Roman Sicily (where Latin was a second language). It is possible that a few Jews came to hear Paul talk, as there was a Jewish community at Syracuse, but we know of no subsequent “Letter of Paul to the Syracusans.” However, there is no doubt that it was Paul who brought Christianity to Sicily, even though his stay in Syracuse lasted only three days.
Naples, a famous and dazzling city perched on a beautiful rock coast is where we dock today. Paul landed in the Bay of Naples on his way to Rome. We’ll travel inland to ancient Pompeii, dating almost to the time of Paul, where you can see the spectacular ruins that were covered by ash from the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in A.D. 79.
We will visit the Vatican Museum, home to many historical and artistic masterpieces. In the Sis-tine Chapel, we’ll see Michelangelo’s frescoes on the walls around us, and we’ll conclude our tour with a visit to St. Peter’s Basilica, where we will find Pietá, the only work of Michelangelo actually signed by him. Enjoy free time for lunch and last-minute shopping before we head to our hotel for dinner and an overnight stay.
