Who is God really?

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. (Isaiah 9:6).

I remember decades ago when Life magazine ran a cover story. (You remember paper magazines, right?) The cover featured a stunning picture of the heavens, filled with stars, galaxies, and planets. And on it were printed the words, “Who is God?”

That question is the question of the ages. And you know, that’s the very question a group of men from the East sought to answer so long ago as they looked into the heavens. These men, whom the Bible calls magi, saw something in the stars that led them to take a long journey to visit an infant in the little town of Bethlehem.

These men who came from a very different culture and religion than the Jews somehow knew that this star heralded the birth of the King of the Jews. And not only that, but this King was deserving of worship – a divine King!

As it says in Romans 1:20, For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made….

These men asked, “Who is God?” and found Him lying in a manger. It must have been quite a surprise for a divine King to be found in such humble circumstances. Yet, because of their faith, the magi knew the Lord when they found Him.

Two thousand years later, people still look at creation and try to make sense of it. That’s because inside every man and woman is an innate sense that creation has a Creator, and so must we. This week, I want to look at the journey of these men from the East and explore the path they took as they discovered faith in the Son of God.

So, whether you’ve known Jesus for years or are just testing the waters of faith, start the journey of discovering God through creation. If you don’t know Christ, maybe you’ll meet Him. And if you do, it will deepen your faith. But it must start by looking into creation and asking that question: “Who is God?”

IF YOU WANT TO KNOW GOD, KNOW JESUS, IN WHOM THE FULLNESS OF GOD DWELLS IN HUMAN FORM.
