For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.

Decades ago, Life magazine, famous for its breathtaking photography, ran a cover with a stunning image of the heavens, galaxies and stars and planets scattered across the dark. Printed over that picture were three words: “Who is God?”
What a question. And it’s the very question a group of men from the East set out to answer long ago, when they looked up into those same heavens and saw something that sent them on a long journey to a little town called Bethlehem. The magi looked at creation and knew it was pointing them somewhere.
Two thousand years later, people still look at creation and try to make sense of it. And according to Paul, creation is making sense: it is shouting a message. God’s invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been on clear display since the world began, in the things He has made. Inside every man and woman is an innate sense that creation has a Creator, and so must we.
That’s why Paul can say something so sobering: they are “without excuse.” No one will be able to stand before God and say, “I never had a clue.” The sunrise was a clue. The night sky was a clue. The newborn child, the changing seasons, the vastness of the ocean, all of it has been preaching, every single day, that God is real and God is great.
Now, creation can tell you that God exists, and that He is powerful and glorious. What creation cannot do is tell you how to be saved. For that you need the gospel, you need the Son who came down from those very heavens. But creation is meant to start the journey, to provoke the question, “Who is God?”, and then send you looking until you find Him in Christ.
So, whether you’ve walked with Jesus for years or you’re just testing the waters of faith, let me encourage you to start that journey of discovery again. Step outside tonight and look up. Get a bigger perspective. The same God who flung those stars into place and calls each one by name knows your name too, and He has gone to great lengths to be found by you.
Don’t let the wonder become routine. Ask the question the magi asked, the question on that magazine cover, and don’t stop until it leads you to the manger, and to the cross.
