There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

Remember that it was not Paul who divided his letter into chapters and verses, those came centuries later. So, the despairing cry that ends Chapter 7, “Wretched man that I am!,” runs straight into the triumphant answer of Chapter 8 without a pause. The very next thought is this: “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” From the depths of the struggle to the heights of assurance, in a single breath.
By all accounts, General Robert E. Lee was a model soldier. A West Point graduate, he never received a single demerit in all his time there. They called him the “marble man,” so straight and precise he was nearly flawless.
One day a frightened private was summoned before him for some infraction. The young man stood there trembling, visibly shaken in the presence of the great general. So, Lee broke the silence kindly: “Son, you don’t have to be afraid. You’ll only get justice here.” And the soldier looked up and said, “Sir, that’s exactly why I’m shaking. I know what I did was wrong. I don’t need justice — I need mercy!”
That’s every one of us before a holy God. We don’t need justice; under justice we’re condemned. We need mercy. And the glory of this verse is that mercy is exactly what we receive in Christ. When we stand before God, those of us who are in Jesus will not be met with the verdict we deserve. There is now no condemnation, none, for those who are in Him.
Look at the precision of Paul’s words. “No condemnation”, not less condemnation, not reduced condemnation, but none at all. “Now”, not someday when you’ve improved enough, but right now, this moment, settled. And “for those who are in Christ Jesus”, the whole thing rests not on your performance but on your position in Him.
Notice that little word “therefore.” It points back to everything Paul has just said, the war with the flesh, the daily failures, the cry of the wretched man. And it declares that even in the middle of that ongoing struggle, there is no condemnation. The believer who battles sin and stumbles is not under God’s gavel. The case has already been decided at the cross.
Do you feel the weight lift? You can fight the good fight tomorrow not as a defendant terrified of the verdict, but as a child who already knows the Father’s heart toward him. Your sin was real, and it deserved condemnation, but Christ took the condemnation, and what’s left for you is mercy.
So, thank God today for His mercy. If you’re in Christ, you will not stand before Him and receive justice. You will receive grace. The trembling private got mercy from a kind general; you have something far greater, a Savior who already bore your judgment, so that for you there is no condemnation at all.
GOD’S MERCY COMES ONLY THROUGH JESUS CHRIST. IF YOU’RE IN HIM, THERE IS NOW NO CONDEMNATION.
