But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved…
–Ephesians 2:4-5
I heard about a man from China who was keeping up a family tradition of putting a nine-course meal on one of his family member’s graves. One day, an American was also at the cemetery putting flowers on his family member’s grave. So the American watched the Chinese man place a full nine-course meal on that grave. He was amused.
So he went over and said, “Let me ask you a question. When is the man in that grave going to eat that meal?” Pointing to the newly laid-out flowers on the other grave, the Chinese man said, “As soon as the man in that grave smells those roses!”
Apart from Jesus Christ, every man and every woman is dead. They can’t sense, can’t feel, and can’t know of the things that are spiritual. There is no hunger for God’s Word or for prayer, for spiritual ministry or for service. Why? Because people are dead without Jesus Christ.
But on the other hand, in Jesus Christ we are made alive. And when we’re made alive, we can hunger for God’s Word. We can yearn for His fellowship. And we can desire to serve Him with our lives.
In Christ, we’re alive. So if you haven’t, come to Christ today and experience real life that’s only found in a relationship with Him!
