Momma don’t let your Boys grow up to be Cowboys

A special devotional written this week by my wife, Deb Graham-

It was in first grade when I was first asked what I was going to be when I grew up.  My answer was – a teacher.  Something about teaching was already in my blood.  When I was about five my Dad built a playhouse in the back yard.  I immediately called it my “schoolhouse”.  I remember there was a huge blackboard and old school desks.  I was in heaven.  Fast forward twenty odd years and I was standing before a class of 8th grade football boys in a rural Oklahoma town.  I was assigned to teach science (not one of my majors) and I think they were the teachers if the truth be known.  My teaching career was cut short when I suffered a miscarriage. My teaching vocation was short but sweet – for God had other plans.  It was not what I had pictured for myself, but the years have been rewarding.  Many times, I would question whether I had missed my calling, but my Mom would always encourage me by reminding me that God had a plan.  As the years went by, I was reminded of that powerful lesson.  I hope that I was that model for my children and that when the time comes, they will guide their children with the same wisdom for God still has a plan.

My prayer and scripture for you today is:

“Hear, my son, your father’s instruction.
And do not forsake your mother’s teaching;
Indeed, they are a graceful wreath to your head
And ornaments about your neck.”  Proverbs 1:8-9
