Focusing on God when you’re tempted to turn

“I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. You shall have no other gods before me.”

–Exodus 20:2-3

Have you ever been really thirsty, but the only thing you could get to drink was a sugary soda? It tastes so good as you guzzle it down, but about ten minutes later, you’re thirsty again and you’ve got a sticky throat. So, you look down at the bottle and it says those famous words: “Artificially colored and artificially flavored.”

While it’s one thing to drink an artificial drink, the tragedy is that many people are living on artificial substitutes for the satisfying experience of living for the Lord. But God couldn’t have been clearer in today’s passage from the Ten Commandments where He essentially says, “Nothing, and no one, can do what I do!”

God is a God who knows He’s the real thing—no substitutes… no artificial experiences. Yet, so many people today fill their lives with junk and never truly get to experience the goodness and satisfaction only God can give.

What about you? Is God the real thing in your life? Or have you found yourself at times substituting other things for Him? When you’re tempted to turn to counterfeit gods, keep your eyes focused on the true God because He’s the only one that really satisfies!

GOD IS THE ONLY ONE THAT WILL EVER TRULY SATISFY YOU. SO WHEN YOU’RE TEMPTED TO TURN TO A COUNTERFEIT GOD, STAY FOCUSED ON THE REAL THING!
