Are you ready for heaven?

You may know this story about a pastor teaching a bunch of kids at a Vacation Bible School. He asks, “How many of you want to go to heaven?”

Everyone’s hands shot up, apart from one small boy in the front row. “Son, don’t you want to go to heaven when you die?”

“Oh! When you die? I thought you were getting up a group to go right now!”

Maybe you’re a bit like this little boy. Heaven seems like a good prospect for the future, but you wouldn’t want to go right now…

Of course, it’s natural to want to hang around on earth as long as you can. I’m guessing there are loved ones you don’t want to leave. Maybe you still have lots of things to tick off your bucket list!

And yet, we must be ready.

This life is all we know – but we must remember it’s not all there is! Scripture makes it plain that as believers “our citizenship is in heaven” (Philippians 3:20). And so we’re told to “set your minds on things that are above” (Colossians 3:2).

The Bible is packed with truths to help us live in the here and now in light of our eternal hope. One of my favorites is when Jesus refers to heaven as His “Father’s house” (John 14:2). He wants us to know it’s a place of ultimate belonging, complete security, total acceptance, and unrelenting love.

Friend, lift your eyes to heaven and be ready for “what God has prepared for those who love him” (1 Corinthians 2:9)!
