Diagnosis of the human heart

The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; who can know it? I, the LORD, search the heart.

—Jeremiah 17:9-10

We live in an age that has one answer for nearly every problem: look within. The television talk show hosts preach it, the self-help gurus build empires on it, and the spiritual trend-setters wrap it in religious language. Find the divinity within you, they say. Your journey ends when you discover the god inside. Well, give me a break.

This thinking isn’t new, and it isn’t harmless. It tells us there’s no need to believe in only one God, or only one way to God. There are many ways, they insist, and many gods, and the real destination is the deity hiding inside your own heart. It sounds flattering. It sounds freeing. And it is dead wrong.

The God of the Bible tells us the exact opposite. He admonishes us not to look to ourselves, not to look within, and Jeremiah records why: “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; who can know it?” That’s God’s own diagnosis of the human heart. It is not a reliable compass. Left to itself, it will lie to you, flatter you, and lead you off a cliff while assuring you, you’re on the right road.

But don’t stop at the hard diagnosis, because God doesn’t. The very next verse supplies the answer to Jeremiah’s question, “who can know it?” God answers, “I, the LORD, search the heart.” You can’t fully know your own heart, but He does. So, the One to trust is not the self you can’t even figure out; it’s the Lord who sees all the way to the bottom of you and loves you still.

Do you see the difference? If you begin by looking to yourself, you’ve started in the wrong place entirely. We were made for God, created by Him, for His purpose and His pleasure. And it is in Him, and in Him alone, that we discover our true identity and the security and significance our lives were meant to have.

That’s the great irony of the look-within philosophy. It promises to help you find yourself, and instead it loses you, because it points you to the one source that cannot deliver. You will never find your deepest identity by digging around inside a deceitful heart. You find it by looking up, to the God who made you and knows you completely.

Life, then, is not about controlling our own lives or mining our own hearts for answers. It’s about submitting to the control of Jesus Christ, exchanging our life and our ways for His life and His way. And far from being a loss, that exchange is the only place lasting identity and security are found.

So, forget the talk show folks and the self-help gurus. Stop interrogating a heart that can’t be trusted to tell you the truth. Trust in the Lord, who searches the heart and still calls you His own.

DON’T LOOK WITHIN A DECEITFUL HEART FOR ANSWERS. LOOK UP TO THE LORD WHO SEARCHES THE HEART AND TRUST HIM.
