One of the most important truths I’ve learned about prayer is this: Not all prayer is the same.
Jesus made that clear when He said, “When you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites” (Matthew 6:5). He wasn’t speaking to people who didn’t pray—He was speaking to people who prayed regularly, but prayed in the wrong way.
They prayed to be seen. They prayed to impress. They prayed with words—but not with their hearts.
And as Jesus said, that kind of prayer is empty.
That’s a sobering thought, isn’t it? Because it means it’s possible to say prayers… and not actually be praying.
Jesus goes on to warn against another kind of ineffective prayer… what He calls “empty phrases” (Matthew 6:7). That’s repetition without relationship… going through the motions while the heart is somewhere else.
So what kind of prayer does God actually hear? Jesus answers that too.
“But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret” (Matthew 6:6).
Real prayer is personal.
It’s not about performance. It’s about presence. It’s not about being heard by others. It’s about meeting with your Father.
And here’s the promise: “Your Father who sees in secret will reward you.” (Matthew 6:6)
That reward is not just answers—it’s relationship. It’s knowing God. It’s experiencing His presence in a way that reshapes your life from the inside out.
We may accomplish many things after we pray. But nothing we do carries more power than the moment we come before God in prayer. That’s where we receive His life, His strength, and His power.
So let me ask you, not how often do you pray… but how real is your prayer life?
Because when prayer becomes real, everything begins to change.
