Finding God’s way when the stakes are high

The way of a fool is right in his own eyes,

but a wise man listens to advice.

–Proverbs 12:15

I’m a huge sports fan. And I’d have to say that one of my most favorite sports to watch is football. That’s because when the stakes are high, there’s just so much intensity in the game, especially in the final few minutes with a close score.

Often in those final few minutes, the team will call a timeout and the players will gather around the coach as he tells them what they’re going to do next. The reason they do this is so there’s no doubt that the play they’re about to run is the right one, and everyone knows exactly what to do.

When I think about a timeout in football, I see a tremendous application for the Christian life. Many times, especially when the stakes are high, we as believers need to call a “timeout” and talk with others – both our biblically-informed mentors and our Christian friends – to seek advice for what to do next.

It’s easy to become a loner in the Christian life. But don’t let that happen. Surround yourself with mature spiritual mentors and friends who can give you good biblical counsel when you need it. When you do that, you’ll be ready to go God’s way when the stakes are high.
