And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.

Romans 8:28 is not a slogan to cross-stitch and hang on the wall. It is a truth God wants to plant deep in your heart, something to stand on when life makes no sense at all.
We all like to be in control. In control of what we wear, what we eat, where we live, how much we make, how successful we are. And most of us like to think we know best, too. But the truth is there’s so much we simply cannot control, sickness, accidents, natural disasters, the timing of a death. It’s usually when we come to the end of our own control that we finally begin to depend on God.
And here’s what we discover when we do: God can see the whole picture. “All things work together for good.” But let me be careful, because this verse is often misquoted. Paul does not say all things are good. Nor does he merely say “it’ll all work out” in some vague way. He says God causes all things to work together for good. We don’t believe in blind chance. We believe a sovereign God is actively weaving every thread, even the dark ones, into something good.
What does “good” mean here? Not necessarily comfortable, easy, or the outcome we’d have chosen. The good God is working toward is spelled out in the very next verse: to make us more like Jesus. God is committed to bringing glory to Himself and good to your life by conforming you to the image of His Son. And He does that through the circumstances of your life, the joys and the sorrows alike.
Charles Spurgeon said it beautifully: “God is too good to be unkind, too wise to make a mistake. And when you cannot trace His hand, you can always trust His heart.” There will be times when you cannot trace His hand. That’s when you trust His heart. Remember the cross: when evil did its absolute worst, God did His greatest best. If He can bring the salvation of the world out of the murder of His Son, He can bring good out of your hardest day.
Notice, too, who this promise is for: “those who love God… who are called according to his purpose.” This isn’t a blanket guarantee that everything turns out nicely for everyone. It’s a precious promise for the child of God, anchored in His purpose for your life.
So, when you begin to hand control over to Him, you’ll find an amazing freedom. You no longer must live up to the world’s impossible expectations or carry the weight of outcomes you were never meant to manage. This world keeps lying to you that you’re never good enough, but God is good enough, and He is in control.
Whatever you’re walking through today, you can rest. God is putting it all together, piece by piece, for your good and His glory.
