How to break free when grief won’t let go

C. S. Lewis was plunged into the depths of grief after the death of his wife. He wrote, “Her absence is like the sky, spread over everything.” Grief can feel that way – beyond measure, with no clear beginning and no end in sight.

But as believers, we know we’ll see our Christian loved ones again in heaven. What a glorious promise!

But how do you deal with the pain of loss right now?

Here are some biblical truths to help you move through that overwhelming sadness in a healthy way – so you get better, not bitter:

First, remember God is with you.

Sometimes, in our lowest moments, we’re so focused on what we’re feeling that we don’t look up and recognize God’s presence. But the truth is, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble” (Psalm 46:1).

Your loving heavenly Father will help you, hold you close, and dry every tear.

Second, let good grief do its healing work.

Grieving the loss of a loved one is normal, natural, and helpful for healing your emotions.

Good grief is calling out to God when you hurt – but then steadying yourself with God’s promises. Remind yourself of His love, His grace, and His power daily.

Soak in David’s words in Psalm 62:8, “Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before him; God is a refuge for us.”

Don’t let your grief keep a paralyzing grip on you. As you turn to God and His Word for comfort and healing, He will fill your heart with the hope of heaven!
