Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law (Romans 13:8).
A few years ago, I saw where a film crew went into a mall and interviewed some so-called “Christians” who were shopping for gifts just a few days before Christmas. The key question of the interview was, “What is the real meaning of Christmas?”
What was astounding to me wasn’t the fact that most people didn’t know what Christmas was about, but that most of those who were interviewed didn’t even mention God or Jesus Christ. Instead, most answered saying things like, “It’s a time for family” or “It’s about giving and receiving gifts.”
We live in a world where the average person hasn’t the foggiest idea of the meaning of Christmas. Even many people who put up Christmas trees and even nativity scenes, can’t tell you what Christmas is really all about.
But the heart of the season isn’t a “what;” it’s a “who.” Apart from the person of Jesus Christ, Christmas becomes nothing more than a feel-good time of indulgence rather than a season of connecting with Christ through selfless giving.
That’s why, as Christians, we have the sacred obligation this time of year to let people know what – or really who – Christmas is all about. Now, there are many well-intentioned people today who fight tooth and nail against the secularization of Christmas. But we need to stop and make sure we’re fighting for the right things.
So, what does keeping Christ in Christmas look like this season? Well, it begins with love, not harsh words. I’m talking about a love that provokes us to action by ministering to hurting people and feeding the hungry. We can’t just say we love Jesus. We have to show it!
Ask yourself what it might look like to share the love of Christ with someone this season. That’s how you keep Christ in Christmas – by living out His love each day!
KEEP CHRIST IN CHRISTMAS THIS SEASON BY SHOWING GOD’S LOVE TO THOSE WHO NEED IT MOST!
