How to win the war within you

For I delight in the law of God, in my inner being, but I see in my members another law waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members. Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin.

Romans 7:22-25

I’m a huge baseball fan. And of course, one of the all-time greats of the sport is Babe Ruth. He had very humble beginnings… abandoned by his parents when he was seven and raised in an orphanage. But it was discovered early on that little George Herman Ruth had an incredible ability to hit a ball with a bat.

Well, Ruth became a baseball player, but his off-the-field (and sometimes on-the-field) troubles limited his career. He could hit the baseball like no other and he aspired to become a manager of a team. But he was never given the manager’s position because of his behavior.

Throughout his life, in spite of his outward success, Babe Ruth was fighting a huge battle on the inside… a war within his own spirit. And tragically, I don’t know if he ever won the war within.

Each of us faces a battle within. And while it may not be as severe as The Babe’s, we fight nonetheless. But for those of us who are in Christ, we can win that war over the enemy in our lives, over our flesh, and over the world. Submit to the Spirit in your life, not the flesh, and you’ll find victory over the war within.
