We have a great deal of religion in America, but there’s very little practice of godliness and righteousness. Even the Church is silent. Rather than changing society with the Gospel, we’re conforming to society. We’ve gotten used to the darkness.
What we need is revival from Almighty God – the kind of revival that shakes this nation from sea to shining sea. We need a miracle in America!
There are many striking parallels in Psalm 80 between the nation of Israel and modern-day America. God gave Israel a land, a Lord, a law, a liberty, and a light to share with the nations. These same wonderful components have comprised our country.
And just like ancient Israel, I believe America – for the most part – has desecrated her land, denied her Lord, defied her laws, and departed from her liberties. Therefore, we need to pray as the psalmist did in Psalm 80:7, “Restore us, O God of hosts; let your face shine, that we may be saved!”
The kind of revival we need comes when we repent of national heresies like crime, immorality, drug addiction, and abortion. Religion without righteousness is repugnant to Almighty God. He is calling us to holiness and righteousness and repentance!
Years ago I met Dr. Bill Bright, founder of Campus Crusade for Christ and a patriot for our nation. He said, “There is nobody to elect to get us out of the mess we’re in as a nation. But if we get right with God, even a little child can lead us.”
Patriotism isn’t just flags and fun and fireworks. Real patriotism is falling on our faces before God, repenting of sin, and asking Him to bring revival. There can never be public and national revival until there’s personal and individual revival.
Second Chronicles 7:14 says, “If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”
Let’s put ourselves in a position of contrition before God and ask Him to send revival. Let’s pray for our leaders and for our national hope to be restored as we choose the next leader for America. That’s how we can be real patriots at this critical hour.
