To the weak I became weak, that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all people, that by all means I might save some. I do it all for the sake of the gospel, that I may share with them in its blessings.
–1 Corinthians 9:22-23
Picture a winding road going up a hill. As you look at it, you notice its dangerous curves and foreboding cliffs. All of a sudden, you see cars navigating those curves, and most of those cars are driving off the edge of the mountain. So you’re put in charge of helping reduce the number of people who are driving off the cliff. What would you do?
Well, first, you might want to put up some guardrails. This would give them a warning that a dangerous cliff is ahead, and would probably help stop some of the cars before they actually tumbled over. Second, you’d probably create a good response team with state-of-the-art medical and rescue equipment like helicopters and ambulances, staffed with paramedics and doctors.
While you might not save everybody, you’d save some. And while most of the world today is headed toward a Christless eternity, there are things we can do, like putting up guardrails—active, healthy churches in communities around the globe. You can also bring in responders—those people who go out and take the message of Christ to the hurting and dying people of the world.
The task of taking the saving Gospel of Jesus to the ends of the earth is on us as the people of God. So let’s grow our local churches and send out those who will reach the hurting and dying around the globe!
