But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.
–1 Peter 2:9
I’m often intrigued when I look at how a lot of Christians react to the changing winds of our culture. Take, for example, when the government made sanctioned prayer in schools illegal. Many Christians threw up their hands and said, “Look… they’re taking God out of schools!”
Now let me say they’ve done many things to take the influence of God out of our schools. But one thing is for sure: The only way to keep Jesus out of our schools is to keep Christians out of our schools. And they haven’t done that yet!
The truth is that much of our fear of taking God out of the public square comes from a “top-down” view of spirituality, where the officials have to sanction our worship. But if we truly see ourselves as a priesthood of believers, then there’s no way they can take Jesus away unless we stay silent.
So wherever you are today, remember that God has you exactly where He wants you to be a witness for Him. Don’t expect those at the top to be your spiritual leaders. Be a priesthood right where you are and you’ll keep Jesus right in the public square where He belongs!
KEEP JESUS IN THE PUBLIC SQUARE BY SEEING YOURSELF AS PART OF A PRIESTHOOD OF BELIEVERS SENT TO PROCLAIM HIM TO ALL PEOPLE
