Knowing the amazing love of God

God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

–Romans 5:8

There’s an old hymn that I just love that talks about the love of God. It begins,

The love of God is greater far
Than tongue or pen can ever tell;
It goes beyond the highest star,
And reaches to the lowest hell.

Yes, the love of God is an amazing thing. But far too often, many believers dip into their own romantic ideas of what love is when thinking about God’s love. They think, “God is so lucky to have me in his church. I’m glad he looked at me and saw that I was worth saving!”

But the reality is that God did not save you and me because you were so worthy of salvation! God looked at humanity and said, “My child, you have a disfigured face, your breath is awful, and you can’t even take care of yourself. But despite the fact that you are utterly pitiful and miserable, I love you and I’m going send my Son to die for you.”

Now, that kind of love makes no sense to us, does it? We can’t fathom the depths of God’s abundant love. The love of God is unconditional, unchangeable, and forever! And when the love of God is in us, we have a wonderful love to share with someone else.

You know, I love how that old hymn ends,

Could we with ink the ocean fill,
And were the skies of parchment made,
To write the love of God above
Would drain the ocean dry;
Nor could the scroll contain the whole,
Though stretched from sky to sky.

THOUGH YOU DID NOT DESERVE IT, GOD LOVED YOU AND SENT JESUS CHRIST TO DIE IN YOUR PLACE. SO SHARE THAT LOVE WITH OTHERS EVERY DAY!
