Living above the negative circumstances of life

But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved—and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.

–Ephesians 2:4-7

Back when I was playing ball, I was taught that we should always play our position. Our coaches drilled that into our heads! And really, that’s what God wants us to do as well. He’s telling us, “Play your position!” You and I are positioned now at the right hand of the Father. We’re seated in the finished work of Christ and are lifted up with Him in the heavenly places. Not just when we go to heaven, but today!

But you know, every now and then, I’ll ask someone, “How are you doing?” and they’ll say, “Well, pretty good under the circumstances.” And I wonder, “What are you doing under the circumstances? You’re a Christian! You’re seated with Christ! All things are under His feet and our feet!”

As a believer in Christ, your circumstances are never indicative of your position in Christ. And you and I are called to live above the world by viewing our circumstances in light of Christ’s finished work on the cross.

Our circumstances are like a mattress. You ought to be on top of a mattress, not under it. And you’re on top of your circumstances if you’re in Christ. So whatever situation you face in life, remember that your position in Christ is far higher than any circumstance you will face!

CHRIST HAS SEATED YOU IN THE HEAVENLY PLACES IF YOU’RE IN HIM. SO PLAY YOUR POSITION BY LIVING ABOVE LIFE’S NEGATIVE CIRCUMSTANCES.
