Renew your mind

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

—Romans 12:2

When I was a boy, I built a pinewood derby car. And I learned something about it that turns out to be a parable for the Christian life. As long as I was rolling downhill, it was easy to keep up speed. But the moment the slope leveled out, I’d start to slow, and eventually I’d stall and stop. Then somebody had to push me back up the hill and shove me down again to get going.

A lot of Christians live like that little derby car. As long as somebody’s pushing, a great worship service, a conference, a crisis that drives them to their knees, they’re flying high. But the push wears off, the hill levels out, and they coast to a stop, waiting for the next shove. What we need is not another push downhill. We need a power source inside, a constant, continual commitment to the Word of God that keeps us moving even at the bottom of the hill.

That’s exactly what this verse is about. Paul gives two commands, one negative and one positive. First: “do not be conformed to this world.” The word “conform” means to be poured into a mold. We’re bombarded and softened up by our culture every day, molded into its image without even noticing. Paul says don’t let the world squeeze you into its shape.

But you can’t win this battle just by resisting. So, here’s the positive command, and it’s the key: “be transformed by the renewal of your mind.” The word “transformed” is the word from which we get metamorphosis, the caterpillar becoming a butterfly, a change from the inside out. The Christian life is not behavior modification, where you grit your teeth and force yourself to act differently. It’s spiritual transformation, where God changes you at the level of the mind, and the behavior follows.

And how does the mind get renewed? By developing the mind of Christ, learning to think the way He thinks. That happens as we saturate ourselves in the Word of God. Not reading the Bible here and there when we feel like it, but really taking time to study it, comprehend it, meditate on it, until His thoughts begin to reshape our thoughts.

One of the best ways to renew your mind is to memorize Scripture and make it your own. When worry hits, recall Matthew 6:33: “seek first the kingdom of God.” When a hard decision looms, recall Proverbs 3:5–6: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart.” Then pull those verses out for strength and direction in the moment of need.

So, make the commitment. Spend time in His Word every single day. Memorize a verse a week. And let God do the metamorphosis, transforming you from the inside out, until you’re no longer molded by the world but renewed in the likeness of Christ.

DON’T LET THE WORLD SQUEEZE YOU INTO ITS MOLD, BE TRANSFORMED FROM THE INSIDE OUT BY A DAILY COMMITMENT TO GOD’S WORD.
