“Revelation: What it Means and Why it Matters”
When I began teaching on the Book of Revelation, the first question I wanted to answer was “why” — why study a book filled with incredible imagery and seemingly confusing prophecy. To answer, the “why,” we need to know what the Book means and why it matters.
The Book matters first and foremost because it is the Word of God. The Bible from beginning to end is His story. And, Revelation is God’s final word.
There are 1,000 prophecies in the Bible, half of which were fulfilled in the first coming of the Lord Jesus Christ. The Book of Revelation contains much of the remaining prophecies.
In the Book of Revelation we learn of the angels, and hordes of demons,. We read about the Great Tribulation, when judgment is unleashed on the earth, and world wars centered over the Middle East. Great cataclysmic events scar the skies, the antichrist arrives, and the battle of Armageddon pits good and evil as history comes to an end.
But most importantly, the Book promises that Jesus is coming again to defeat His enemies and establish a new heaven and a new earth, where He will reign. A new heaven and a new earth!
It’s not “revelations,” though there are many visions and revelations that come from the Word of God here, but it is the Revelation of Jesus Christ. While there are many things that are difficult to understand, and though many are frightened to even take a look at the book of Revelation, I’m here to tell you that at its core, it’s really a very simple premise: Jesus is coming again! He is the Lord of life, and the Lord of all, and He is on the throne of the universe! He holds history in His hands: generations and governments, nations and leaders of nations!
The Revelation is the revelation of Jesus Christ!
