After the deep, demanding chapters on God’s sovereignty, Paul brings us to one of the clearest, simplest, most beautiful statements of salvation in all the Bible. After all the theology about election and predestination, it comes down to this: “if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”
Isn’t that wonderful? The God who is high and sovereign has made the door of salvation low enough for a child to walk through. You don’t need a seminary degree. You need to confess and believe.
Look at the two halves, because they fit together perfectly. “Confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord.” That word “Lord” is everything: it means Master, Sovereign, the one with the right to rule your life. When Paul wrote this, Christians were being killed for saying “Jesus is Lord” instead of “Caesar is lord.” To confess it was to stake your life on it. It still means more than words: it means surrender.
And then, “believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead.” This isn’t belief in a vague way, a tip of the hat to religion. It’s a heart-deep trust in the central fact of the gospel: that Jesus died for your sins and rose again, conquering death. The confession of the mouth and the faith of the heart belong together, an outward declaration flowing from an inward conviction.
Now notice what saves you here. It is not a religious ceremony. It is not your good behavior. It is not your church membership. You’re not saved by baptism, by communion, by attending services, or by giving to charity. Every believer should do those things, but none of them can save. What saves is confessing Jesus as Lord and trusting in His resurrection.
And just a few verses later Paul makes it even wider: “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” Everyone. No exceptions.
So let me make this as plain as Paul does. Salvation is not complicated. It is not earned. It is confessed and believed. Have you done that? Have you ever truly confessed with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, not just Savior to call on in a crisis, but Lord of your whole life, and believed in your heart that God raised Him from the dead?
If not, you can do it right now, right where you are. You don’t have to clean yourself up first. You don’t have to understand everything. Call on the name of the Lord. He has promised: you will be saved. And there is no promise in all the universe more certain than the promise of God.
SALVATION IS THIS SIMPLE, CONFESS JESUS AS LORD AND BELIEVE GOD RAISED HIM. EVERYONE WHO CALLS ON HIM WILL BE SAVED.
