Six days you shall labor

“Six days you shall labor, and do all your work.”

— Exodus 20:9

We talk a great deal about rest, and rightly so. But the Fourth Commandment does not only command rest. Tucked inside the very same passage that tells us to stop is the command to work. “Six days you shall labor, and do all your work.” Work is not an enemy to escape. It is a calling to fulfill. And a Christian who does not take both sides of this commandment seriously is only getting half the picture.

Work existed before the fall. God placed Adam in the garden to tend it and keep it before sin ever entered the world. Work was the assignment, not the punishment. What changed after sin was not that work existed but that it became hard, with the sweat and resistance and thorns of Ecclesiastes. But the calling to work, to build, to create, to contribute, to serve is written into the human soul by the Creator Himself. We are made in the image of a God who works. He made the heavens and the earth. He sustains all things. He is not idle. And neither are we to be.

Paul was direct about this: “If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat” (2 Thessalonians 3:10). That is a principle for the able, not the helpless. The church is to care sacrificially for those who genuinely cannot care for themselves. But the person who is capable and simply chooses not to contribute is violating a creation principle that runs all the way through Scripture. God designed work as the context in which human beings find purpose, dignity, and the satisfaction of making something of value.

Whatever your work is today, whether in an office, a factory, a classroom, a home raising children, or a field, it matters. It matters to God. It is a stage on which the character of Christ can be displayed. Do it with excellence. Do it with honesty. Do it with genuine care for the people it serves. Do it with the awareness that Jesus is watching, and that He cares not just about the result but about the integrity you bring to the process.

Work hard. Rest well. That is the rhythm God designed for you, and it is good.

WORK HARD FOR SIX DAYS, THEN REST WITHOUT GUILT. BOTH ARE COMMANDED BY GOD.
