Ten ways to guard what God has given you

“How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to your word.”

— Psalm 119:9

Joseph was young, alone, far from home, and working for a man whose wife decided she wanted him. He had every reason that bad theology produces to say yes. He was far from family. He was under stress. He was not treated fairly. “Surely God would understand.” But Joseph did not reach for rationalization. He reached for God. He said: “How then can I do this great wickedness and sin against God?” And he ran (Genesis 39:9).

Joseph is the model. Not because he had no temptation, because he clearly did. But because he had settled the question before the temptation arrived. He had already decided. The time to decide about your moral commitments is not in the middle of the test. It is before the test begins, in the quiet of the heart, in the clear light of God’s Word. When the moment comes and the pressure is on, you do not think your way through it. You run.

Here are the guardrails God’s Word puts in place. Recognize that anyone can fall. As Paul said: “let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall” (1 Corinthians 10:12). Resolve to be pure, not because you are strong, but because you have surrendered to the One who is. Remove yourself from situations you know will compromise you. Renew your mind daily with Scripture. Rely on the Holy Spirit, not willpower. Run from temptation, not toward it. Resist the devil, and the Bible says he will flee (James 4:7). Be accountable to someone who will ask you the hard questions. Rejoice in your spouse. Proverbs says to let the wife of your youth satisfy you always. And remember that you belong to God, and your body is the temple of His Spirit.

Most affairs do not begin with a dramatic decision. They begin with a small compromise, a moment of inattention, a friendship that crosses a line so gradually that neither person saw it happening. The guardrails are not restrictions. They are wisdom. Honor them.

Your marriage is worth protecting. Your integrity is worth protecting. And the God who designed both has given you everything you need to guard them.

SET THE GUARDRAILS NOW. DON’T WAIT FOR THE TEMPTATION TO DECIDE WHERE YOU STAND.
