The light that’s been given to you

In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. (John 1:4-5).

It doesn’t take much looking today to see that the world is in darkness – intellectual darkness, political darkness, and moral darkness. Every single person, at some point in his or her life, also goes through a time of darkness. Whether it be a darkness of failure, darkness of sin, or the darkness of sorrow, there’s no escaping the fact that darkness is all around us. This darkness causes many to wonder, “Will the darkness win? Will evil prevail?”

Over 2,000 years ago when Jesus Christ was born into the world, it looked like the darkness was going to win. And while most people were afraid of the darkness of oppression by the Roman Empire, Jesus opened their eyes to the reality of something even darker… the darkness of their own sin.

The Bible tells you and me that God dwells in unapproachable light. And in our humanity, our fallen state, we can’t know God, nor stand in His presence, or experience His love. We are far away from Him, called “enemies” and “aliens” in His sight. How could you and I ever stand in the light of the pure, pristine holiness of God Almighty?

Well, man could not approach the Light, and so God gave the Light. That night when Jesus was born, when God became a baby and the infinite became an infant, a door began to open, and the entire universe began to crack open as Jesus began to pave the way to the Father.

God sent Jesus into the world to shine a great light… a light so bright and so overwhelming that those who experienced it were forever changed. Because Christ has come into the world, we who have sat in the darkness have seen a great Light. On that night when Christ was born, that star punctured the blackened sky and signaled the coming of the Savior. And now God is with us.

As you reflect on Christ’s birth this year, don’t forget that without Him, you and I would still be in darkness. So, take time to reflect on His perfect light that He’s given to you!

APART FROM CHRIST, THE WORLD WOULD REMAIN IN ETERNAL DARKNESS. SO, TAKE TIME TO REFLECT AND BE THANKFUL FOR THE LIGHT HE’S GIVEN TO YOU.
