“None is righteous, no, not one….”
–Romans 3:10
Do you know why you and I feel guilty at times? Well, it’s because we are guilty!
Guilt is to the spirit what pain is to the body. When you hurt, when you experience pain, it is an indication that there’s something wrong. And the same is true regarding pangs of guilt. We cannot avoid or dismiss its consequences.
Now, some people feel they are victims, not sinners. They say things like, “I know I’m not doing what I should, but I’m not responsible for my actions.” Well, Adam tried that with God after he bit the forbidden fruit. He said, “The woman whom You gave to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I ate.” He blamed Eve and God!
You see, society wants to erase sin from our culture. No one sins anymore. Instead, we blame addictions, diseases, disorders, and psychological malfunctions. There are no sins, only syndromes.
But if sin is gone, why do these same people wrestle with feelings of guilt when they lay their heads down at night? It’s because there’s only one cure for guilt, and that’s the grace of God. And you can’t experience his grace until you admit your sin.
You can’t brush aside your guilt, but there is hope. “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9).
THERE IS ONLY ONE CURE FOR GUILT, AND THAT’S THE GRACE OF GOD.
