The problem of unspeakable evil

For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.

–Romans 8:13

Several decades ago, Mike Wallace did an interview on 60 Minutes where he spoke with a survivor of Auschwitz Concentration Camp named Yehiel De-Nur. After World War II, Mr. De-Nur testified in the Nuremburg Trials against many of Hitler’s top generals who had ordered the genocide of six million Jews.

Mike Wallace showed a film clip of the trials where Adolf Eichmann, one of the masterminds of the concentration camps, walked in and came face to face with Yehiel De-Nur. De-Nur began to cry violently on the film clip.

Cutting back to the interview, Wallace asked him if he was crying because of his bitter hatred. De-Nur responded, “No. When I saw him… I realized this was a common man. And when I looked in his eyes, I realized that I am capable also of this crime. I am exactly as he!”

What a heart-wrenching portrayal of the fallenness of humankind. We see these so-called “monsters” in the media and think, “I would never do that.” But the truth is that the potential for evil resides in every single one of us.

Yet in Christ, we are redeemed day by day. And the flesh that pulls us away from the things of God is put to death as we are transformed into His likeness if we submit to Him. Resist evil and let yourself be transformed into the image of Christ as you put to death the flesh.

RESIST EVIL BY PUTTING TO DEATH THE FLESH AND FOLLOWING THE SPIRIT OF GOD INSIDE YOU.
