For he grew up before him like a young plant,
and like a root out of dry ground;
he had no form or majesty that we should look at him,
and no beauty that we should desire him.
–Isaiah 53:2
One thing many people find perplexing as they read the Scriptures is that we never find a physical description of Jesus in the Bible. Sure, we have imaginative pieces of art and speculative research on how a man during His time may have looked. But really, that’s about it.
Why is that? Well, one reason is that His personal appearance was not something that would cause us to worship Him. In fact, we’re told in today’s Scripture that Jesus wouldn’t have had any beauty or majesty that we would have considered attractive. But we don’t love Jesus because of His physical attractiveness. We love Him because of who He was!
Now, that throws some off because many people’s idea of love today is so corrupt. They decide to love because they find something or someone physically attractive. But the love God wants us to have for Jesus is much deeper – a love based upon His identity as God and His saving work.
So what did Jesus look like? It doesn’t matter. Who is Jesus and what did He do? That makes all the difference. Love Jesus because He is the Lord who loved you first and came to purchase your salvation on the cross!
LOVE JESUS NOT BECAUSE OF HOW HE LOOKED, BUT BECAUSE OF WHO HE IS AND WHAT HE DID.
