Who can condemn you?

Who shall bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died… who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.

—Romans 8:33-34

Paul keeps hurling out his triumphant questions, and here come two more, with two more unshakable promises behind them: for the believer, there is no accusation that can stick, and no condemnation that can stand.

First, the matter of accusation. “Who shall bring any charge against God’s elect?” You do have an accuser. The Bible calls Satan exactly that, “the accuser of the brethren.” His chief tactics are to slander you, shame you, stigmatize you, isolate you, and crush you. He looks for every opportunity to discourage, defame, and defeat the child of God. If you’ve ever lain awake at night with a voice rehearsing your failures, you’ve heard him at work.

But here’s the answer that silences every charge: “It is God who justifies.” Picture a courtroom. The accuser steps forward, ready to read off your sins. But before a single piece of evidence is entered, the Judge, God Himself, has already issued the verdict: “No charge.” As God’s children, fully reconciled through Jesus, we have total, eternal immunity to the accusations against us. The case is closed.

Then comes the second question: “Who is to condemn?” And Paul piles up the answer in four glorious clauses about Jesus. Christ is the one who died, He paid your penalty. More than that, He was raised, death couldn’t hold Him. He is at the right hand of God, the place of authority and honor. And, astonishingly, He is interceding for you, right now, praying for you before the Father.

Stop and take that in. The same Jesus who prayed His great High Priestly prayer in John 17, “I am praying for them”, is praying for you at this moment. And do you believe Jesus gets His prayers answered? Of course He does. So, the prayers of Christ Himself, alive and ascended before the Father, are holding you fast and seeing you through to the end and beyond.

So, who is left to condemn you? No one. The One with every right to condemn you is instead the One praying for you. The verdict isn’t a narrow escape, either. The word Paul uses next, “more than conquerors”, means we overwhelmingly win. We don’t squeak by at the buzzer. We dominate, and we’re winning now, because the One at the Father’s right hand pleads our case.

What does this mean for your Monday morning and your midnight worries? It means you can stop living under a cloud of self-condemnation. When the accusations come, and they will, you don’t have to argue your own case. You point to the Judge who has already justified you and the Savior who is already interceding for you.

No charge can be filed. No condemnation can stand. If God has justified you and Christ is praying for you, the courtroom of accusation has lost all its power over you. Walk out free.

GOD HAS JUSTIFIED YOU AND CHRIST IS INTERCEDING FOR YOU. NO CHARGE CAN STICK AND NO CONDEMNATION CAN STAND.
