Mama Said

As you grow older holidays seem to carry more emotional memories.  This Mother’s Day I will be remembering one of the greatest gifts from the Lord – my mother.  I was fortunate to have her for 89 years.  I miss her every day.  She was my prayer warrior, my confidant, my supporter and my best friend.  She loved me without reservation.  Her smile could make the darkest day bright and her love for the Lord was contagious.  Until the day she died she yearned to share the Gospel with whomever God placed in her path – her nurses, her doctor, or the cafeteria worker. Often during these days, I thank the Lord that she is already in heaven.  It would have been so hard for her to have gone through the isolation of this pandemic.  But I know she would have been strong – she always was.  No matter what circumstances she faced she always had the right word of encouragement – for she truly had wisdom.  In thinking about all she taught me I will always be grateful for the times of discipline.  For it was in those times that my faith grew.  She always had a way of cutting right to the point – steering me to improve my walk with the Lord.  I love you Mom – I know your day in heaven is filled with rejoicing because you are with the Lord on high.

Mother in Law

There are many things I was not ready for when I got married.   Being young and idealistic brought many obstacles into my life.  I hadn’t planned on sharing my new husband with anyone.  But as most young brides find out – he may be my husband, but he still is his momma’s boy.  Those days were confusing and to complicate things even more Jack’s father was killed when we had only been married a few months.  So increased responsibility became his – at least emotionally.  It was only a few short years later that Jack’s Mom died.  She never got over losing his dad.  Only years later, did I learn the valuable lesson that being a mother is a lifetime calling.  As my boys began to date, I would pray for each one.  And in the goodness of the Lord both found exceptional wives.  They both love the Lord, love their husbands and are raising their children in the faith.  Different personalities from different walks of life but one thing in common – they are part of our family.  I love being a mother in law not only to these godly young women but to my precious son-in-law.  What an opportunity God has given me to know the blessing of now six children and I do not take this for granted.

Momma don’t let your Boys grow up to be Cowboys

It was in first grade when I was first asked what I was going to be when I grew up.  My answer was – a teacher.  Something about teaching was already in my blood.  When I was about five my Dad built a playhouse in the back yard.  I immediately called it my “schoolhouse”.  I remember there was a huge blackboard and old school desks.  I was in heaven.  Fast forward twenty odd years and I was standing before a class of 8th  grade football boys in a rural Oklahoma town.  I was assigned to teach science (not one of my majors) and I think they were the teachers if the truth be known.  My teaching career was cut short when I suffered a miscarriage. My teaching vocation was short but sweet – for God had other plans.  It was not what I had pictured for myself, but the years have been rewarding.  Many times, I would question whether I had missed my calling, but my Mom would always encourage me by reminding me that God had a plan.  As the years went by, I was reminded of that powerful lesson.  I hope that I was that model for my children and that when the time comes, they will guide their children with the same wisdom for God still has a plan.

Mother and Child Reunion

Not all little girls play with baby dolls – but I had them all over my room.  My favorite was a baby that wet and cried.  She wasn’t very pretty because I cut her hair one day when my Mom wasn’t looking.  But I loved her.  I remember that my Mom made her clothes and I always had a bottle nearby for her.  I learned a lot from taking care of that baby doll.  I carefully watched my Mom take care of my little sister and I copied her every move.  I learned to love my baby because I saw my Mom love my little sister.
